Vizinhanças: An Environment

26.7.2024 -28.7.2024

Opening: 26th July 2024, from 5 pm onwards

The Portuguese word “Vizinhanças” translates to “Neighborhoods.“
Béla Pablo Janssen (BPJ) drew inspiration from Hélio Oiticica’s pioneering work
in “Quasi Cinema” for his 2024 in situ installation at Rio de Janeiro’s iconic
beaches. This installation aimed to create a poetic and fluid space on the
shoreline, capturing the rhythmic movement of waves and the interplay of light
and wind through mosquito nets, which reflect BPJ’s impressionistic approach
often translated into abstract paintings.
Hélio Oiticica, a pivotal figure who transitioned from São Paulo’s abstract
painting movement to innovative installations and happenings during his time in
1970s New York City, continued to flourish within Rio de Janeiro’s
Neoconcretismo Movement. His influential “Tropicália” not only named a
significant social, political, and musical movement in Brazil but also remains a
profound inspiration for contemporary artists like BPJ.
Following its debut in Rio de Janeiro, BPJ’s installation will be transformed into
a new show at Studio 45 in Hamburg, with Hamburg-based DJ and scholar
Júliø, originally from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, hosting the evening with his
infectious charm that resonates with the cultural exchange embodied in
“Vizinhanças.”
