Notes for a Photographic Study“ ist ein Addendum zu Methoden der „Documentary Idea“. Ihre Form verweist auf den präskriptiven fotografischen Text aus den Written records in the Farm Security Administration. Zwischen 2018 und 2026 entstandene fotografische Untersuchungen zeigen Digitalisierung und Dienstleistungen. Rückblickend erweist sich, dass die manageriale Verschmelzung von Informationstechnologie und Alltagshandlung das öffentliche Versprechen nicht eingehalten hat, die soziale Kooperation mit Hilfe des Smartphones auf eine höhere Ebene zu heben. Zwischen billigem Geld der Nullzinspolitik in den Expansionsjahre des E-Commerce, Zuversicht in das „Blitzscaling“ von Start-ups, sozialem Widerstand und systemischen Anreizen, finanzielle Risiken zu minimieren, ist stattdessen das obskure Geschäftsmodell börsennotierter Unternehmen entstanden. Im Zeitverlauf entfaltet sich das Wissensproblem, das sich in die dokumentarische Fotografie fortsetzt und in der Ausstellung von Marinus Reuter @farewell_internet thematisiert wird.

“Notes for a Photographic Study” is an addendum to methods of the “Documentary Idea.” Its form draws on prescriptive photographic texts from the Written Records of the Farm Security Administration. Photographic studies created between 2018 and 2026 depict digitalization and service work. Looking back, it is evident that the managerial effort to merge information technology with everyday tasks did not live up to the public promise of elevating social cooperation to a higher level through the use of smartphones. Amid cheap money from the zero-interest-rate policy during the years of e-commerce expansion, confidence in the “blitzscaling” of startups, social resistance, and systemic incentives to minimize financial risks, an obscure business model for publicly traded companies emerged instead. Over time, the knowledge-problem unfolded, continuing into documentary photography and is addressed in Marinus Reuter’s @farewell_internet exhibition .
