Nach der Ausstellung „THE PLACE OF unREST“ im vergangenen Jahr, zeigt die Künstlerin Julia Maiquez Esterlich nun den zweiten Teil.
Die installativen Arbeiten bewegen sich im Spannungsfeld von Geborgenheit und Beklemmung, das in den verschiedenen Bereichen unseres Lebens entstehen kann. Das Bett als Ort der Ruhe, in dem wir uns sicher und geschützt fühlen, indem aber auch Einsamkeit, unerfüllter Sehnsüchte und Albträume entstehen können. Unser Zuhause, das Vertrautheit und Sicherheit erzeugt, aber auch ein Ort der Enge und Beklemmung werden kann. Die Arbeiten spielen mit den Ambivalenzen zwischen Nähe, Verbundenheit, Unsicherheit und Unwohlsein.

(*1985 Valencia, Spanien). Lebt und arbeitet in Hamburg. Studierte an der Fakultät San Carlos, der Universität von Valencia UPV und an der HFBK Hamburg. Ihre Arbeiten oszillieren zwischen Fotografie, Skulptur und Installation. Ihre Werke offenbaren emotional geladene Erzählstrukturen, die sich in verschiedene Materialen übertragen und stofflich wie auch inhaltlich erfahrbar werden.

After last years exhibition “THE PLACE OF unREST” artist Julia Maiquez Esterlich is now presenting the second part.

The installation revolves around the tension between comfort and unease, which can arise in various areas of our lives. The bed, as a place of rest where we feel safe and protected, can also give rise to loneliness, unfulfilled desires, and nightmares. Our home, which creates familiarity and security, can also become a place of confinement and suffocation. The works play with the ambivalence between closeness, connection, uncertainty, and unease.

(*1985 Valencia, Spain). Lives and works in Hamburg. Studied at the San Carlos Faculty, the University of Valencia UPV and at the HFBK Hamburg. Her works oscillate between photography, sculpture and installation. Maho Sato und Hye-Eun Kim erforschen die Schnittstelle von Musik und Malerei. Die Performance besteht aus einer intuitiven Bewegung und den daraus entstehenden Farbspuren, die von der Musik geleitet werden.

Maho Sato is a performance artist graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, her research focuses on “inhabiting one’s body” as a transformation possibility and a daily practice through movement, sound and painting. She was born in Tokyo and now lives and works in Florence, Italy, where she is engaged in a collective art creation.

Hye-Eun Kim, born 1992 in Berlin, graduated from the University of Fine Arts Hamburg.

She combines her classical music training with free improvisation and repetatitive loops to create a spiritual synthesis in which harsh sounds collide with melodic motifs to explore the space between past, present and a possible future.

Mit der fotografischen Arbeit centrum schafft Janusz Beck eine Vergegenwärtigung der verborgenen Schönheit und der zeitgeschichtlichen Wichtigkeit der Architektur der Nachkriegsmoderne in Hamburg. Die Ausstellung stellt eine Auseinandersetzung mit den Bauten und dem dieser Architektur zugrundeliegenden Gesellschaftsbild mit allen seinen Widersprüchen dar.

Der hamburger Fotograf Janusz Beck (*1983) setzt sich in seinen fotografischen Arbeiten mit der Dokumentation von soziokulturellen, politischen und architektonischen Kontexten im Ländlichen und (Sub-)Urbanen Raum auseinander. Hierbei lenkt er sein Augenmerk auf die Erfassung einer spröden, oftmals melancholischen Schönheit des Profanen und Alltäglichen.

Coral Teeth

According to Greek mythology, few mortals re-surface alive after a visit to Hades down the River Styx. This descent, traversing from the
land of the living into that of the dead, is called katabasis – sinking ever deeper into the unknown with no promise of a return.
‘Coral Teeth’ embarks on a kind of artistic katabasis, as it ventures to the deepest parts of the ocean.

Exploring the chthonic space is something both Maik Gräf and Lulu MacDonald navigate in their separate practices. In this collaborative
show, the two artists explore the darkness of the ocean together and plunge ever further into its watery depths. Like deep sea divers, they
succumbed to the murky wetness of the dark room, a space which felt instinctive to Gräf, a photographer, who moved around in the dark
with ease, understanding when he must take a break, breathe the light. As they descended, sculptor MacDonald held onto Gräf like a diver’s
guiding rope, carefully experiencing the dark room for the first time, as her lungs acclimatised and her eyes adjusted.

‘Coral Teeth’ is the second exhibition in a three part series called ‘Mining The Deep’, an underwater odyssey plummeting from the ocean’s
surface to the deep and finally encountering the seabed itself. The ocean figures as this show’s protagonist as the artists collaborate and
combine their practices and material understandings much like crew on an explorative voyage or scientists conducting field research.
This show revels in how the wet darkness of developing photographs mimics the qualities of the ocean underworld it seeks to capture. Using
light as pigment and chemicals as mark makers, Gräf and MacDonald build images which were repetitively doused, drowned and drenched
in darkness.

Fascinated by the sloppy and inky boundaries between wet and dry, light and dark, positive and negative spaces within their collaborative
practice, MacDonald learnt how to develop layers of image and Gräf learnt how to sculpt them. Together, they navigated this all whilst the
language surrounding the process was fraught with elusive riddles with moral implications; seeing the light, exploring the darkness become
linguistic stumbling blocks whilst trying to retrieve information from the underworld. The artists grappled with the nuances of flooding the
developing paper or creating droughts on the page, but it was only by allowing themselves to be buried within both extremes that allowed
for the process to take place most organically. By relinquishing these moral and linguistic expectations, the artists found this only reaffirmed
the sticky and blurry space between each pair of opposites: light and dark, wet and dry, image and sculpture.

The results remain a gesture only partly controlled by the artists’ hands as they welcomed darkness into the room as their third collaborator
to make the final decision of how the work will exist.

Light and dark are therefore not only tonal and pictorial but they also become sculptural, allowing them to transform into materials as well
as characters in an exhibition which navigates the liminality of the ocean: a space of queerness, possibility and radical imagination. The
ocean offers us a space to re-become, repetitively re-examine our relationship with bodies and our relationships to one another. This all
becomes more poignant when it is considered that the ISA are currently building a moral compass about how the international sea bed
should be allowed to be mined on the free market. It speaks to this human inability to co-exist peacefully with the mysterious, the elusive as
we insist on perceiving, probing and drilling into every space we don’t yet understand.

So now, we beckon you on the banks of the River Styx. Take a deep breath and dive with us.

Maren Katerbau untersucht in ihrer fotografischen Arbeit Ruhner Berge das Phänomen der Transformation einer Gegend auf dem Gebiet der ehemaligen DDR. Ruhner Berge ist eine Arbeit, in der die Betrachtung auf verschiedenen Ebenen geschieht. Sie kreist um die Thematisierung von Orten, Akteuren, Identitäten und deren Inszenierung. Analysiert wird damit, wie bestimmte Ideen und Vorstellungen verbreitet werden. Die künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit der Zeit nach der deutschen Wiedervereinigung ist auch eine Langzeitbetrachtung einer Region in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Schnelle, rhythmisch komplexe Sprünge, das Drehen und Rotieren der Schultern, heftige Kontraktionen des Brustkorbs kombiniert mit präziser Fußarbeit kündigten die Ankunft der Ahnen an. Die maskierten Mitglieder des Egúngún-Totenkults verbanden sich in polyrhythmischen Tänzen mit den Verstorbenen. In den Yoruba-Königreichen in West-Afrika schenkten die Egúngún Leben und nahmen es.

Heute sind sie vielerorts verstummt.

Mit Hilfe eines Skalpells bringt Jumoke Olusanmi das leise Murmeln und erstarrte Schwingen der Egúngún auf Papier.

Chantal Maquet präsentiert ihre Graphic Novel in einer szenischen Lesung. In dem Buch stellt sie ihre Herangehensweise an Themen wie Kolonialismus und Rassismus vor. Dabei bilden Fragen zu ihrer eigenen Familiengeschichte den Ausgangspunkt für Reflektionen über individuelle und gesellschaftliche Verantwortung.

Zum einen befragt sie einen Historiker, wie Luxemburg zu einer kolonialen Vergangenheit kommt und wie sich die öffentliche Wahrnehmung dazu verändert.
Zum anderen lässt sie sich vom Präsidenten der Fairtrade ONG erklären, wie koloniale Strukturen in der heutigen Weltwirtschaft anhalten.
Ausserdem beantworten Mitarbeiterinnen des Büros für Interkulturelle Bildung Fragen zu Rassismus und Diskriminierung.
Letztendlich gibt Chantal Maquet einen Einblick wie sie Kolonialismus und Rassismus in ihrer Kunst behandelt.

Anlass für die Graphic Novel ist es, die behandelten Themen in den luxemburger Unterricht zu bringen. Doch auch wenn manche Blickwinkel in dem Buch diese spezifische Perspektive einnehmen, so machen die Inhalte nicht an Sprachgrenzen halt. Die Buchvorstellung findet auf Deutsch statt.

Dagegen hilft kein Aspirin, wohl aber der konzertierte Widerspruch aus Collage und Text, die wunderbare Medizin
des Abseitigen und Rauen, das Locken der Baumwipfel und die Sinfonie aus Zwischentönen!
In seiner neuen Ausstellung präsentiert Fynn Steiner neue Collagen als Gegengift für Stillstand,
Trübsinn, Traurigkeit!

Zur Vernissage am 2.12. tritt Musiker Reverend Christian Dabeler auf und wird ein besonderes Jazz- Set präsentieren!
